Tesla battery health: SoH, capacity and range

A percentage only makes sense when you know the calculation and the reference behind it.

State of Health (SoH)

SoH describes remaining capacity relative to a reference for the battery when new. In our supported BMS method, estimated capacity is divided by the full-capacity reference and multiplied by 100. The report shows the estimate only when the required data is available.

Nominal capacity is not a health percentage

An available nominal full-pack energy reading is useful, but it cannot by itself establish battery health. We do not divide it by the number in a model badge and present that as a verified SoH result. Older Tesla models can provide different signals or lack the relevant reference.

Range and state of charge

State of charge describes how charged the battery is now. Estimated range is the car’s range estimate under its assumptions. Neither is a direct measure of remaining battery capacity, and real driving range also depends on use and conditions.

Read the source and date

The report distinguishes measured readings, calculations, vehicle estimates and reference information. Compare like-for-like methods and dates. A BMS estimate is not a guarantee, and a value marked unavailable should not be interpreted as a fault.
